U.S. Defeats Spain in Soccer!
From coast to coast, Americans are celebrating one of the greatest upsets in soccer history after the U.S. national team defeated the #1-ranked team in the world on Wednesday.
"We got Shaq!" Cleveland resident Jason Kaufmann said of the 2-0 victory over Spain. "With LeBron and Shaq on the same team, the Cavs are a lock to win the NBA title next year."
Minneapolis native Jim Migely was equally excited as he discussed his newfound love of soccer.
"The Vikings are probably better off with Brett Favre," Migely said. "But then again, he's 39. It's a gamble, I guess."
The euphoria over the stunning upset was not limited to the midwest. Scott Greene of Burbank, California relived his reaction to Clint Dempsey's game-clinching goal in the 74th minute of the Confederations Cup semifinal:
"Can you believe the Dodgers are even better without Manny [Ramirez]?" he exclaimed. "You'd think with his suspension, the team would go into a tailspin. It just goes to show what a great manager Joe Torre is."
Even President Obama reveled in greatest moment in the history of U.S. soccer.
"My Bulls have the 16th and 26th picks in the NBA draft," Obama gushed. "I don't see us getting a great player, but you never know. I'm just glad we have Derrick Rose."
Whether the U.S. team goes on to defeat Brazil in the Cup final remains to be seen. One thing is for certain, soccer fever is here to stay.
"Yes, Tiger [Woods] had a poor showing in the U.S. Open," Chicago Tribune writer Mark Lawrence wrote of Sunday's upcoming final match, "But with British Open only a few weeks away, I expect to see the world's #1 player bounce back in a big way."
